More than 1,000 items that belonged to the legendary soul singer Luther Vandross will go up for auction, later this month.
Those handling his estate will sell a vast range of possessions including diamond watches, crystal vases, thermos flasks and handwritten lyrics. The items come from his three homes in the US and from his tours.Vandross died aged 54 in July 2005. He won eight Grammy awards during his long career. Many of the items in the sale on 5 and 6 December show the singer’s opulent lifestyle, said Max Szadek, Vandross’s personal assistant for many years.Describing a mink-lined chair he told Associated Press that it “symbolised the lap of luxury that Luther lived in and just how a star, a world-class entertainer, kind of lived it out in his private life, too”.The collection spans the singer’s entire career, with pieces such as a record from David Bowie’s Young American, on which Vandross sang backing vocals, and a double platinum certificate for his hit Dance With My Father. The total estimated value of the pieces is $600,000-$800,000 (£292,000-£389,000), said a spokesman for auction house Dawson and Nye.
